Ergonomic challenges

task analysis 1.jpg

Awkward grip angle

When making sideways cuts, the user is forced to grip the handle with a severe wrist angle.

Limited one-handed reach

The outward reach of the tool is not optimized. The saw blade protrudes up rather than out from the direction of the user’s arm.

Dangerous saw orientation

The saw blade is perpendicular to the users body so that if the saw kicks back in the event of a jam, it could potentially cut the user’s wrist or chest.

Configuration redesign

I flipped the traditional orientation of the chainsaw body and handle in order to provide a more natural orientation that could be safer and easier to use in a tree.
